The National Sailing Academy took part in the worldwide initiative “Steering the Course” which has the goal of getting more women to participate in the sport of sailing.
The initial event took place on Sunday 30th May 2021, and we saw 80 women passed through the academy and head out on a choice of an 8 ft RS Zest Dinghy, a 14ft RS Venture Connect Dinghy, or a 38ft Catamaran.
Chief Instructor hailed the event as a success, ‘We have been overwhelmed by the response. We have been keen to see more women on the water, and finally, it seems people have decided now is the time to try”. He went on to say, “Since I learned to sail, I have never been without work. For us, sailing isn’t just a pastime, but it is also a career and we hope for many of the people trying it for the first time they will have discovered a new passion in life.”
The event was so successful that a second day was added on Sunday 6th June 2021, and a further 70 women walked through the gates and again got the opportunity to try sailing for the first time.
From Sunday 13th June 2021, the NSA begins weekly Sunday lessons for women at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm, which will cost EC$40 per session. Interested parties can call 562-8060 or register at www.nationalsailingacademy.org/registration
