In January 2024 the Antiguan team "Dadli Explorers" will be taking part in the Atlantic Dash, an ocean rowing challenge that will see crews rowing 3,200 miles across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands and arriving in Jolly Harbour.
The team currently have 3 members and they are looking for somebody with ties to the National Sailing academy to join them.
You do not have to have any previous rowing experience but applicants must be willing to commit to a training programme which will involve time spent together as a team in the boat, passing RYA qualifications such as essential navigation, sea survival, first aid at sea and VHF radio operators license (courses provided for free) and help with other aspects of the challenge such as social media and fundraising.
Experience on the water would be great, but not essential. The most important thing is that you're able to work well with others as part of a team, be willing to learn and commit to the training.
Teams taking part in the Atlantic Dash are required to arrive in Lanzarote by the 15th of December, with the departure date from Lanzarote being on the 3rd of January. The average time for a crossing is between 50 and 60 days, so you would also have to be able to be away from Antigua from the middle of December 2023 until around early/mid-March 2024.
The costs of things like flights and accommodation will be covered through fundraising and the crew are being supported by the event organisers, so the entry fee is already covered and a boat is also being provided.
This is a great opportunity for somebody, especially if they are looking to get into the marine industry.
